The name Colorno comes from the original position of the village, between the rivers Lorno and Parma: Caput Lurni, head of Lorno. In the Middle age the benedectine monks drained the land for agriculture. From 1303 to 1458 Colorno was feud of the noble family da Correggio, then passed to the Sanseverino until 1612.
With Barbara, in the second half of the 16th century, the castle became a remarkable cultural centre.

From 1612 to 1731 Colorno passed to the Farnese, dukes of Parma, who made it their Summer residence at the end of the 17th century.
In that time radical changes were made to the Ducal Palace and the Garden and were built important buildings as the Orangerie.
In the year 1748 The Duchy of Parma passed to the Borbone family, who started a new beginning for Colorno, either for its urbanism and for art and culture. Everything changes thanks to the wife of Parma's Duke Don Filippo di Borbone, the famous Louise Elisabette first daughter of the King of France Luigi XV, who turned the Reggia according to the french tastes, in a small Versailles. With the annexation of France, Parma became a district of Napoleone's empire.
In 1816 Maria Luigia, ex wife of Napoleone Bonaparte, becomes Duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla, introducing changes and restorations to the Reggia of Colorno. After the Unification of Italy in 1861, started a period of abandonment and spoliations, that ended only in the second half of the 20th century.
