The Sanvitale family ruled over Montechiarugolo until 1313. In 1406 the Torellis undertook the reconstruction of the fort, which was later transformed into a country manor by the Farnese family.
The castle, rising on a slope above the Enza river, has retained its 12th century features and is decorated with frescoes, heraldic emblems and grotesques by Cesare Baglione.
The fort also contains a collection of archeological finds.
In the church of San Quintino, founded in the 13th century, are several frescoes dating back to the 15th century.
In the nearby, 9 km east, is located Monticelli Terme, a well-known thermal spa thanks to waters rich in salt and ideal for the treatment of respiratory disorders, baths and hydromassage.

Weekly market: Tuesday in Monticelli, Wednesday in Basilicanova and Thursday in Basilicagoiano.
